11/4/2024 Boilermaker Water Cooler Chat: Double Duty Edition
Rants, ravings, and somewhat sensical opinions following the wild, wacky, and wide-wide world of Purdue sports.
I fancy myself a neat drinker. When I have a cocktail, however, I prefer an Old Fashioned.
- 2 tsp simple syrup
- 3 dashes of bitters
- Couple fingers of your favorite Bourbon
- Splash of water
- Luxardo cherry, orange slice
- One singular block ice cube.
Enjoy!
Oh and Purdue lost at football.
The Football Game: Northwestern 26, Purdue 20 (OT).
At least they showed some life for the second half… but again, the Boilermakers can’t close a game out.
You know, the type of game which Purdue actually had better talent on the field and still lost? I know in the year of our lord 2024 that is a funny thing to say… but there were incredible coaching blunders throughout the game. Seemed like every decision throughout the game, was the wrong one. Going for it in your own territory, throwing a 2 yard pass on 4th and 4. Not kicking the field goal in overtime. Killing the offensive momentum by forcing a two QB system. Allowing huge gains on 3rd and 1000 because the defense took their foot off the gas with the scheme. Never once… (eh hem) NEVER ONCE… adjusting to a RB flair route out of the backfield. Yeah, Purdue lost this game because they got out coached… instead of the normal out coached and out skilled.
Hudson Card went 21/37 for 267 yards. Devin Mockobee rushed for one of the most impressive touchdowns that I have ever seen.
I had this whole article planned out. 3000 words with jokes and pictures, relevant information and life lessons. Nah. Purdue lost to Northwestern. I’m mixing my cocktail.

Break It Down:
I hope you are sitting down when you read this. Purdue is no longer bowl eligible.
The 60-whatever thousand people who showed up to the game don’t deserve this. My grandmother doesn’t deserve this. Alumni don’t deserve this. People who get paid to write about Purdue football don’t deserve this. The players don’t deserve this. My dog, Reese, doesn’t deserve this. The Athletic Department doesn’t deserve this. The budget for Purdue’s athletic department, doesn’t deserve this. The future of football at Purdue University doesn’t deserve this. Life isn’t about deserving, however.
Here I am, Mr. Boiler-colored old gold plated glasses.
I adore Purdue sports. I always will. It is engrained in me. My God. My family. My Alma Mater. My goodness this season… drives a man insane.
So I am sitting here, sipping an old fashioned. Lifting the veil that these words were all typed tongue-in-cheek. I have my general pleasant demeanor. After all, who could be upset with this delicious cocktail in my left hand? I might just make another!
OH HEY! BASKETBALL IS BACK!!!
Purdue basketball is back in action, looking to duplicate or exceed their output from last season. Coming off of a National Championship appearance, Purdue has to fill the (literal and figurative) massive shoes of two time National Player of the Year, Zach Edey.
Luckily for the Boilers, Purdue returns three all Big-10 caliber players in Braden Smith, Fletcher Loyer, and Trey Kaufman-Renn, all three starters from last year’s team. In the preseason it appears that freshmen Gicarri Harris and Daniel Jacobson are the other two starters, however, Matt Painter has consistently said that his lineups are matchup contingent. Expect some flexibility throughout the year.
Other contributors will be Miles Colvin, Camden Heide, CJ Cox, Caleb Furst, Will Berg, Brian Waddell, Raleigh Burgess, & Jack Benter.
Despite an overwhelming freak-out from a certain Purdue contingent on facebook following Purdue’s exhibition loss to Creighton, the Boilermakers are exactly 0-0 on the season. The games count this week! Remember, Purdue lost to Arkansas in their superbowl exhibition last year, and things turned out just fine!
A Look Ahead:
Football: Purdue will travel to Ohio State on 11/9 and will lose by more points than they scored today.
Basketball: The real games start this week! Matt Painter’s squad will unveil their Final 4 banner in the season opener against Texas A&M Corpus Cristi on Monday 11/4. Following that, Purdue will take on Northern Kentucky on Friday 11/8. The Boilers will be prohibitive favorites in these games, as they iron out any wrinkles heading into stiffer competition.
So glad that basketball is back. I’ll drink to that!
